For years, it has seemed like many banks have been racing to eliminate physical branches. They encourage customers to use mobile apps, ATMs, and online customer service while quietly closing neighborhood locations. Although digital banking is convenient for everyday transactions, it doesn't replace the value of having a real branch staffed by real people. That's why we appreciate what Chase is doing. Instead of retreating from local communities, Chase continues to open new branches in cities and towns across the United States. As travelers who spend thousands of miles on America's highways every year, we've noticed this expansion firsthand. Having convenient access to a nearby Chase branch makes banking much easier when you're away from home. California Chase Bank Location - Photo: © 2026 RoadTour.Net According to a Chase press release issued on February 18, 2026: "JPMorganChase today announced plans to open more than 160 new branches in over 30 states and renovate nearly 600 locations this year as part of a multibillion-dollar investment to expand access to affordable and convenient financial services nationwide." That announcement reinforces what we've been seeing during our travels. Rather than reducing its physical presence, Chase appears to be investing in making banking more accessible to customers across the country. Despite the growth of mobile banking, there are still plenty of situations where visiting a branch is simply the better option. Whether you need a cashier's check, assistance with a complicated transaction, help resolving an account issue, or simply want to speak with someone face-to-face, there are moments when technology cannot replace personal service. Unfortunately, not every bank appears to share that philosophy. Many financial institutions have significantly reduced their branch networks over the past several years. In our travels, we've found that locating some banks — such as PNC — can be surprisingly difficult in certain areas because so many locations have closed. Instead of banking being convenient, customers sometimes have to drive well out of their way just to find an open branch. We don't like this trend. It's unacceptable actually. Banking should be about serving customers—not making them work harder to access basic services. While digital tools are valuable, they should complement in-person banking, not replace it entirely. Eliminating branches may reduce operating costs, but they can also reduce customer convenience and weaken the relationship between banks and the communities they serve. From our perspective, Chase deserves recognition for continuing to invest in physical locations. New branches mean better accessibility, more convenience for travelers, and the reassurance that when you need help from a real person, there's a good chance one is nearby. We hope more banks take notice. Not every customer wants to handle every financial matter through a smartphone or chatbot. There is still tremendous value in walking into a clean, professionally staffed bank branch and receiving personal service. As long as Chase continues expanding its branch network while many competitors continue shrinking theirs, we'll view that as a positive step for customers — and especially for those of us who spend a lot of time on the road. We think it's time to open a Chase account.

More friendly cashiers would be a delight though. Royal Farms is based in Baltimore, Maryland. It runs 200+ locations across Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Based in Atlanta, RaceTrac operates a chain of gas stations throughout the Southern and Midwestern United States. They are in the top 3 on our best gas station pizza list. Outside a Kwik Trip Location - Photo: © RoadTour.Net No. 8 - KWIK TRIP There is no doubt that Kwik Trip offers the best baked good and grocery-like selection of any gas station we've visited. They have struggled with customer service and restroom cleanliness. We have also seen some locations without paper towels. Even with some of those setbacks, they still crush many of their competitors in service and have a cult-like following. Kwik Trip was established in 1965, with locations across the Upper Midwest. Based out of Oklahoma City, they have a wide footprint across the U.S. Outside a Sheetz Location - Photo: © RoadTour.Net No. 6 - SHEETZ Out of the multiple visits to Sheetz in 2025, we mostly encountered good friendly service and clean restrooms with some issues on the speed of checkout as we've waited for a cashier on occasion. With over 800 locations, it is based out of Altoona, PA. Outside a Wawa Location - Photo: © RoadTour.Net No. 5 - WAWA Superior to many of it's competitors in the taste of their food, Wawa has obtained a cult-like following. Based out of Wawa, PA, the company is supercharging it's growth into the Midwest at the moment. They do need to work on keeping up with the restroom cleanliness though. QuikTrip (QT) is headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with locations throughout the Midwestern, Southern, and Western United States. Typically great customer service, clean gas stations, and no issues. The chain has about 200 locations throughout the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus, Ohio metro areas. UDF is based in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Outside a Wally's Location - Photo: © RoadTour.Net No. 2 - WALLY'S In a league of it's own, many might try to compare Wally's to Buc-ee's because of it's size, but Wally's stand out with it's own vibe and culture as the home of the great American road trip. The store features flavored popcorn, BBQ, and also offers ice cream, pizza, beef jerky, baked goods, and Sloosh slushies. With only 2 locations as of Jan 2026, with 1 opening in the Indianapolis area sometime in 2026. Outside a Buc-ee's Location - Photo: © RoadTour.Net No. 1 - BUC-EE'S The number one gas station chain hands down, Buc-ee's routinely has great customer service and clean restrooms, though it can be a nightmare to visit on the weekends because of how busy it is. Buc-ee’s is a Texas-based chain of large travel centers known for its clean restrooms, massive stores, and wide variety of food and merchandise. The company is especially famous for its fresh barbecue, Beaver Nuggets snacks, and branded products, making Buc-ee’s a popular stop for travelers across the Southern United States and soon to be expanding into the Midwest in Ohio and Wisconsin. Axe Throwing Target - Photo: © RoadTour.Net We had never gone axe throwing before, so while visiting the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, we decided it was finally time to give it a try. We headed to The Fair on 4, an entertainment venue located on the mall's fourth floor that combines games, food, drinks, and attractions under one roof. Our first impression? It was a lot more fun than we expected. After a brief safety orientation, we were throwing axes at the wooden targets in no time. Like many first-timers, we weren't hitting the bullseye every throw, but that's part of the experience. There's a satisfying feeling when the axe finally sticks in the target, and before long, it becomes a friendly competition to see who can score the most points. Beyond the entertainment, axe throwing turned out to be a surprisingly good way to relieve stress. It requires focus and just enough physical activity to keep you engaged, making it a unique break from the usual shopping or sightseeing. Whether you're visiting with friends, family, coworkers, or on a date, it's an activity that gets everyone involved and cheering each other on. The venue also offers food and drinks, making it easy to spend a couple of hours there without needing to leave for a meal. During our visit, the food was good, reasonably priced, and the service was quick and friendly—exactly what you want after working up an appetite. If you've never tried axe throwing before, don't be intimidated. The staff provides instructions, explains the safety rules, and helps ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. As with any activity involving axes, it's important to pay attention during the safety briefing and follow all posted guidelines at all times. Per their website you must be "18+ to throw (11+ with a parent or guardian present and must demonstrate comfortability with the axe)". Overall, we had a great experience at The Fair on 4. It was something different, it was enjoyable, and we'd gladly do it again on a future visit to the Mall of America. If you're looking for an activity that goes beyond shopping while visiting the Twin Cities, axe throwing is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

America is filled with incredible places to explore, and every state has something worth experiencing. Some offer breathtaking coastlines, world-famous cities, stunning mountains, or fascinating history. But visiting a place for a week and living there year-round are two very different experiences. For our 2026 list of the 10 Worst States to Live In, we considered factors that affect everyday life, including housing costs, traffic congestion, fuel prices, urban planning, and overall quality of life. While millions of people happily call these states home, we believe they present some of the biggest challenges for the average resident. Life can be easier in these places. Housing costs remain among the highest in the nation, gasoline prices consistently lead the country, and daily traffic in major metro areas like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego can be exhausting beyond measure. Add the ongoing homelessness crisis in many cities, and California becomes an increasingly difficult place for many families to afford. Several of California's largest cities continue to face challenges with crime, including property crime, retail theft, and violent crime in some neighborhoods. While many communities remain safe and attractive places to live, public safety concerns continue to affect residents' quality of life and the state's overall image. California's recurring wildfire crisis also contributes to its ranking. We believe stronger land and forest management, including reducing excess vegetation and improving wildfire mitigation efforts, should be a higher priority to help lessen the impact of future fires, alongside addressing other factors that influence wildfire risk. Our recent road tour through Downtown Los Angeles was disappointing. Compared with our visit in the late 1990s, the area felt noticeably dirtier and less welcoming. Although the city remains one of America's great destinations, our firsthand impression was that Downtown Los Angeles has lost some of the cleanliness and vibrancy we remembered. We hope to see renewed efforts to improve the area's appearance and overall visitor experience. New York New York offers world-class entertainment, culture, and business opportunities—but it also demands a lot from your wallet. Beyond the exceptionally high cost of living, drivers face an endless collection of toll roads, bridges, and tunnels that quickly add up. While New Yorkers are often simply direct and fast-paced, newcomers frequently describe the atmosphere as less friendly than other parts of the country. Crime remains an ongoing concern in parts of New York City. Although many neighborhoods are safe and attract millions of visitors annually, persistent issues involving theft, assaults, and other offenses continue to influence residents' quality of life and the city's reputation. Main concerns: High cost of living Expensive toll roads and bridges Fast-paced culture that many perceive as unfriendly Urban crime State Government mismanagement 3. Illinois Illinois makes the list largely because of the Chicago metropolitan area. Anyone who regularly drives around Chicago knows the combination of traffic congestion and toll roads can make commuting frustrating. Combined with a relatively high cost of living compared to much of the Midwest, Illinois loses some of the affordability that once defined the region. Chicago continues to struggle with violent crime in certain neighborhoods, making public safety an ongoing concern for residents and visitors alike. While many parts of the city remain vibrant and safe, crime continues to affect Chicago's reputation and quality of life. Massachusetts Massachusetts consistently ranks as one of America's most expensive places to live. New Jersey New Jersey packs a tremendous number of people into a relatively small state. That density translates into constant traffic, particularly around New York City and along major highways. Combined with expensive housing and an increasingly urban landscape, many residents find it difficult to escape congestion. Visitors also frequently describe the culture as more abrupt than in many other regions. Main concerns: Heavy traffic High cost of living Highly urbanized Reputation for less-friendly interactions 6. Connecticut Connecticut remains one of America's most expensive states. Housing costs, taxes, and everyday expenses are all above average. Meanwhile, Interstate 95 has earned a reputation as one of the most congested highway corridors in the Northeast, making commuting particularly stressful. Main concerns: One of the nation's highest costs of living Heavy I-95 traffic congestion 7. Maryland Maryland offers proximity to Washington, D.C., but that convenience comes at a price. The cost of living is well above the national average, and traffic around Baltimore, Washington, and surrounding suburbs can become a daily headache for commuters. While the city has many historic neighborhoods, attractions, and dedicated residents, ongoing violent crime continues to undermine quality of life, discourage investment, and damage Baltimore's national reputation. Addressing public safety should remain one of the city's highest priorities. Washington Washington's natural beauty is undeniable, but affordability has become an increasing concern. Housing prices have climbed dramatically in many areas, while drivers also contend with some of the nation's highest gasoline prices. The Seattle metropolitan area continues to struggle with chronic traffic congestion, and many residents believe freeway expansion has not kept pace with the region's rapid growth. Critics argue that transportation policy has focused too heavily on expanding public transit while neglecting the highway system. In our view, the region should be prioritizing the widening of existing freeways and the construction of new ones—including the long-discussed I-605 bypass. Those investments are needed now, not years from now, if the goal is to keep people and commerce moving efficiently. We also believe proposals for mileage-based road charges are an absurd approach to solving transportation problems. Rather than asking drivers to pay more to use overcrowded roads, policymakers should focus on expanding highway capacity and reducing congestion. Seattle has also faced ongoing public safety concerns. The city's national reputation was significantly affected in 2020 when protesters established the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP), temporarily blocking streets and limiting access to part of the neighborhood. While that situation was temporary, many residents viewed it as a symbol of broader concerns about crime, public order, and city leadership. In our view, Seattle should place a stronger emphasis on public safety while continuing to address the region's growing traffic and affordability challenges. Main concerns: Increasing cost of living High gas prices Seattle-area traffic - lack of widening freeways and building new ones Urban crime State Government mismanagement 9. Oregon Oregon's inclusion can largely be summarized in one word: Portland. The old saying "Keep Portland Weird"... well, it may be too weird now. The city's ongoing struggles with homelessness, crime concerns, and urban challenges have significantly impacted perceptions of the state. While Oregon remains one of America's most scenic destinations, Portland's issues continue to overshadow much of what the state has to offer. Portland's experiment with allowing widespread public drug use was mismanagement on an epic scale. The policy proved so problematic that state leaders ultimately reversed course. Combined with a lack of consistent law enforcement, it left parts of the city struggling with open drug use, crime, and deteriorating public spaces. Portland is a great city with tremendous potential, but restoring public safety and maintaining law and order should be top priorities. Main concerns: Challenges associated with Portland. Enough said. Urban quality-of-life concerns State/City Government mismanagement 10. Minnesota Minnesota remains a beautiful state with thousands of lakes and outstanding outdoor recreation. However, concerns surrounding Minneapolis and a steadily increasing cost of living have pushed the state onto our list for 2026. While much of greater Minnesota remains affordable and welcoming, the Twin Cities area presents many of the same urban challenges seen elsewhere across the country. The Minneapolis area has seen far too much civil unrest in recent years. While peaceful protest is a fundamental right, repeated episodes of violence, vandalism, and property destruction have hurt businesses, shaken public confidence, and affected the region's quality of life. Protests have even caused businesses to close because they cannot operate during those events. That's terrible. We believe stronger efforts are needed to promote public safety, restore confidence, and support long-term stability. When a restaurant chain changes ownership, loyal customers often wonder if the food will change too. That question has been surrounding Jersey Mike's ever since the sandwich chain was acquired by a private equity firm, with some customers claiming the quality isn't what it used to be. Naturally, we wanted to see for ourselves. During a recent Road Tour stop, we visited a Jersey Mike's location to find out whether the concerns were justified. We ordered the Club Sub, one of the chain's most popular sandwiches, to get a good representation of the Jersey Mike's experience. Based on our visit, we simply didn't notice the dramatic decline that some people have been talking about. Midwest Jersey Mike's - Photo: © 2026 RoadTour.Net The first thing we noticed was the staff. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and professional. Good customer service can make a significant difference in the experience, and this location delivered. As expected, service took a little longer than at a typical Subway. That's simply part of the Jersey Mike's experience. Employees slice the meats and cheeses fresh for each sandwich, which naturally adds a few extra minutes to the preparation time. While slicing the meat and cheese in front of customers has become one of Jersey Mike's signature features, it felt more like a presentation than a meaningful improvement in the finished product. We couldn't taste a noticeable difference in freshness compared to sandwiches where the meats and cheeses are pre-sliced. The process certainly adds to the experience and reinforces the brand's image of freshness, but based solely on taste, it wasn't something we found made a significant difference. Refrigerated Deli Case inside Jersey Mike's - Photo: © 2026 RoadTour.Net Our biggest criticism wasn't the turkey, ham, provolone cheese, bacon, or fresh toppings on the Club Sub — it was the bread. You have probably have read us complain about restaurant bread before. It's a big problem. This isn't a problem unique to Jersey Mike's. We've noticed the same issue at many sandwich chains across the country. Bread shouldn't simply be a vehicle to hold the ingredients together. It should be one of the highlights of the sandwich. Imagine walking into a bakery and smelling warm, freshly baked bread with a crisp exterior, a soft interior, and rich flavor. That's the kind of experience that can elevate an ordinary sandwich into something memorable. Unfortunately, we didn't get that here. The bread was perfectly acceptable from a texture standpoint, but it lacked the fresh-baked flavor that leaves a lasting impression. While the fillings were fresh and satisfying, the bread felt more like a supporting player than a star ingredient. Jersey Mike's Club Sub Sandwich - Photo: © 2026 RoadTour.Net If you've heard claims that Jersey Mike's quality has dramatically declined since the ownership change, our visit didn't support that conclusion. The Club Sub tasted much like we expected, the ingredients were fresh, and the employees provided friendly service. However, if there's one area we'd love to see Jersey Mike's improve, it's the bread. A more flavorful, bakery-quality loaf could take an already solid sandwich and make it exceptional. Sometimes it's the simplest ingredient that has the greatest opportunity to make a meal unforgettable. For us, that's the difference between a good sandwich and one that's truly worth going out of your way to find. Jersey Mike's is still a decent place to get a meal.

One of the best parts of a road trip is discovering restaurants you've never heard of before. While traveling through Colorado, we decided to stop at a regional Mexican fast-food chain called Taco Star. We weren't sure what to expect, but by the time we pulled away from the drive-thru, we had already found a restaurant we'd gladly visit again. From the moment we arrived, the experience started on a positive note. The gentleman working the drive-thru was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and professional. Great customer service can be difficult to find in today's fast-food industry, so when an employee goes above and beyond to make guests feel appreciated, it deserves recognition. His positive attitude left a lasting first impression and set the tone for the rest of our visit. The location we visited was in Grand Junction, Colorado. It appears that the company name has several locations in Colorado, but they made be owned and operated differently at each one. Just look for this logo (pictured)! For our meal, we ordered the Shredded Beef Chimichanga, and it quickly became one of the standout fast-food items we've enjoyed during our travels. The first thing we noticed was the generous portion size. Taco Star didn't skimp on the filling, providing a hearty meal that offered excellent value. The shredded beef was flavorful and satisfying, while the tortilla was fried to a beautiful golden brown. Perhaps the biggest highlight was the texture. The outside of the chimichanga was perfectly crisp without being overly greasy, creating a satisfying crunch with every bite. Inside, the beef remained tender and well-seasoned, making for a combination that was both comforting and delicious. What impressed us most was that the meal didn't feel like typical fast food. Instead, it tasted like something you might expect from a casual sit-down Mexican restaurant—prepared quickly enough for travelers who need to get back on the road without sacrificing quality. That's a difficult balance to achieve, and Taco Star delivered. Regional restaurant chains often become favorites because they develop loyal local followings while staying focused on quality and service. Based on our experience, it's easy to understand why Taco Star has built such a strong reputation in Colorado. Between the outstanding customer service, generous portions, and well-prepared food, our visit exceeded expectations in nearly every way. If you're driving south of Las Vegas on Interstate 15, there's a roadside stop that's difficult to miss. During a recent Road Tour, we pulled into Terrible's Road House (branded as Chevron) in Jean, Nevada, expecting a typical travel center. Instead, we found what may be one of the largest traditional gas stations in the U.S. The first thing that grabs your attention are the multiple fuel islands. With more than 90 Chevron fuel pumps spread across an enormous forecourt, the station is built to handle a remarkable number of vehicles at once. While Buc-ee's is famous for operating some of the largest gas stations in America, Terrible's Road House appears to be among the biggest non-Buc-ee's fuel stops we've encountered. Once inside, the scale continues. The convenience store is exceptionally spacious, offering wide aisles, an open layout, and a clean, modern appearance. Even during a busy morning visit, the store was well maintained and inviting, creating an experience that feels more like a destination than a simple gas station. One of the highlights was finding Krispy Kreme doughnuts available inside the store—a welcome surprise for travelers looking for a quick breakfast before continuing across the Mojave Desert. The gas station also includes a White Castle, a Midwest chain known for it's sliders. The building's design also stands out from many other travel centers. Rather than relying on a standard convenience store layout, Terrible's Road House incorporates a themed atmosphere with decorative features throughout the interior. One of the most eye-catching displays is a full-sized airplane suspended from the ceiling, giving visitors something unexpected to discover while they shop. Combined with other themed decorations, the store has a personality that makes it memorable. Large travel centers have become increasingly important as road trips continue to grow in popularity. Today's travelers often expect much more than fuel. Clean facilities, food options, spacious stores, and an enjoyable atmosphere can transform a routine stop into a positive part of the journey. Terrible's Road House appears to understand that formula. Based on our visit, this location offers an impressive combination of size, cleanliness, and unique design. While the title of America's largest gas station outside of Buc-ee's would require additional research and measurement, Terrible's Road House in Jean, Nevada, certainly deserves consideration. It is one of the most expansive Chevron travel centers we have visited and a stop that road trippers traveling between Las Vegas and Southern California should consider adding to their itinerary. While filming new episodes for Road Tour Television, we came across a wide variety of fuel options at gas stations across our travels. If you've fueled up at a gas station anywhere in the United States, you've probably noticed the bright yellow buttons on the pump labeled with numbers such as 87, 89, or 93 like we did.
