Don't Do This While Driving in a Storm

We all have places to go, whether it's for work, errands, or leisure activities, but severe weather can always catch you by surprise, transforming a routine journey into a perilous situation. Imagine driving to your destination when suddenly, your phone buzzes with an urgent tornado warning, or you find yourself in the midst of an unexpected downpour of large hailstones that can cause significant damage. The actions you take during these critical weather events can be the difference between safety and disaster, not only for yourself but also for those around you. One critical piece of advice is to avoid stopping under a bridge during a tornado. Many people may instinctively seek shelter under a bridge, thinking it will protect them from the storm. However, this decision can be incredibly dangerous. When a tornado passes over a bridge, the structure can create a wind tunnel effect that accelerates the winds, causing them to reach even higher speeds. This intense wind can turn ordinary debris into deadly projectiles, launching them towards anyone seeking refuge beneath the bridge. These sharp objects, propelled at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more, can easily shatter your car windows, leading to severe injury or worse. Moreover, parking under a bridge poses additional safety issues for other vehicles on the road. Drivers who are not expecting to encounter stopped vehicles may find themselves in a precarious situation, leading to potential accidents or even dangerous pile-ups. The chaos of sudden stops in the middle of a storm can create confusion and panic, putting everyone on the road at risk. While you might be trying to avoid the immediate dangers of hail or a tornado, you could inadvertently become a victim of another vehicle colliding with yours due to the unexpected obstruction. 4

In situations of severe weather, it is crucial to stay informed and make calculated decisions. Instead of seeking shelter under a bridge, look for a sturdy building or a designated storm shelter. If these options are not available, find a low-lying area away from trees and power lines where you can lie flat and protect your head and neck. Always prioritize your safety and the safety of others on the road. Remember that preparation and awareness are your best defenses against the unpredictable nature of severe weather. By staying alert and making informed choices, you can navigate through these challenging conditions more safely.
