States with the Best Highway Rest Areas in America
Here are our picks for the 10 Best Highway Rest Areas in America.
1. Ohio – Ohio Turnpike & Interstates
Ohio earns our top spot thanks to its outstanding service plazas along the Ohio Turnpike. Unlike traditional rest areas with vending machines, these locations feature full food courts, fuel stations, convenience stores, spacious seating areas, and consistently clean restrooms.
Even more impressive, Ohio continues investing in its travelers by rebuilding many of its service plazas into modern facilities with updated architecture, expanded seating, improved accessibility, and enhanced amenities. If you're traveling between Chicago, Cleveland, or the East Coast, Ohio's turnpike plazas are among the best places in America to take a break.
2. Wisconsin – Interstate Highways
Wisconsin has quietly developed some of the nicest interstate rest areas in the Midwest. Many of the newer facilities—especially along Interstate 90—are modern, bright, and well-maintained.
The buildings are attractive, parking areas are spacious, and the grounds are well cared for. Wisconsin consistently delivers comfortable places to stop that make long-distance travel much more enjoyable.
3. Illinois – Illinois Tollway Oasis
Few rest areas are as unique as the Illinois Tollway Oases. Built directly over highways like Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway), these plazas allow travelers in both directions to access the same facility without leaving the toll road.
The elevated buildings offer multiple dining choices, convenience stores, comfortable seating, and generally clean facilities. They're a memorable stop for anyone traveling through the Chicago area and remain one of the most distinctive highway rest stop concepts in the country.
4. Indiana – Indiana Turnpike & Interstates
Indiana is transformed many of its Indiana Turnpike service plazas into impressive new facilities.
On highways like I-65 and I-70, they built car-themed plazas feature attractive modern architecture, improved parking layouts, and much nicer interiors than the facilities they replaced. Once the modernization project is complete, Indiana's service plazas will rank among the finest anywhere in the United States.
5. Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania Turnpike
Pennsylvania continues to offer dependable service plazas along one of America's most historic toll roads.
Travelers will find multiple restaurant choices, fuel stations, convenience stores, and generally well-maintained restrooms. Whether you're crossing the Appalachian Mountains or heading toward Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, these service plazas provide reliable places to recharge.
6. Oklahoma – Turnpikes
Oklahoma's turnpike service plazas stand out because many are operated by Love's Travel Stops, giving travelers access to amenities typically found at one of America's best travel center chains.
With clean facilities, fuel, convenience stores, and McDonald's restaurants at many locations, Oklahoma provides an excellent travel experience for motorists crossing the Southern Plains.
7. Florida – Interstate Highways
Florida's interstate rest areas are consistently among the cleanest we've visited.
Many locations offer attractive landscaping, shaded picnic areas, pet walking areas, modern restroom buildings, and plenty of parking. Considering the tremendous amount of tourist traffic Florida handles every year, the state's rest areas generally do an excellent job serving travelers. They also have overnight security at most of their rest areas.
8. Virginia – Interstate Highways
Virginia's interstate rest areas are clean, welcoming, and conveniently located along major travel corridors such as Interstates 81, 64, and 95.
Many facilities provide tourist information, picnic areas, vending services, and well-maintained restrooms. They're dependable stops whether you're heading through the Blue Ridge Mountains or traveling the busy East Coast corridor.
9. Michigan – Interstate Highways
Michigan offers consistently clean and pleasant rest areas throughout its interstate system.
The state does a good job maintaining its facilities, with roomy parking areas, shaded picnic spaces, and comfortable places to take a break before continuing across the Wolverine State.
10. Massachusetts – Massachusetts Turnpike
Known as "Service Plazas," the rest areas along the Massachusetts Turnpike provide travelers with a convenient mix of restaurants, fuel stations, and travel services.
These plazas are modern, generally well-maintained, and offer excellent places to stop before entering or leaving the Boston metropolitan area. They're among the better toll road service plazas in the Northeast.
The ROAD TOUR Take
A great highway rest area is about much more than a restroom. The best locations provide travelers with a chance to relax, grab a meal, refuel, stretch their legs, and safely prepare for the next leg of the journey.
We're especially encouraged to see states like Ohio and Indiana investing heavily in completely rebuilding their service plazas. Modern facilities not only improve the travel experience but also help promote safer highways by giving motorists inviting places to stop and rest.
As America continues modernizing its interstate system, we hope more states follow their lead. Well-designed rest areas are an investment in both traveler comfort and highway safety—and every road trip is better because of them.
