- Buc-ee's One Step Closer to Opening Massive Location Outside Indianapolis
We recently reported that Buc-ee's, the well-known travel center chain famous for its clean facilities, vast selection of snacks, and unique shopping experience, was actively searching for a suitable site to build a new location near Indianapolis. After consideration and strategic planning, it appears that they have made a decision to focus their efforts on establishing their new travel center on the southside of the city. This decision seems to be a calculated move to avoid a direct competition with another significant player in the travel center market, Wally's, which is anticipated to open its doors on June 30. The chosen site for Buc-ee's will be located in the thriving community of Greenwood, Indiana, specifically positioned off of Interstate 65 at the intersection with East Worthsville Road. This prime location is situated at the southeast corner of that interchange, making it highly accessible for travelers and commuters alike. The strategic placement not only allows Buc-ee's to capture the attention of those traveling along the busy interstate but also caters to local residents who will benefit from the amenities and services offered by the travel center. Buc-ee's is known for its huge facilities, which typically include a wide range of food options, huge clean restrooms, and a variety of merchandise that reflects the local culture and travel needs. Buc-ee's is likely to become a popular destination for anyone passing through the area. Personally, we like the big long one canopy look. It makes the travel center look more grand. This Buc-ee's travel center would have a 74,000 square foot store, with 120 gas pumps, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The site would be in a residential zone, which would need to be approved for commercial use. There will be a hearing on this project on June 22, 2026. It's not clear if there will be any resistance. Buc-ee's is planning to build a second Ohio location in Mansfield, Ohio, but there is starting to be push back by citizens according to some new sources. The Greenwood location would be in a somewhat rural area already littered with massive distribution centers nearby. Our opinion is that this would be a good location in an area already undergoing development. - Customers Deserve Better: Panda Express Continues to Struggle With Basic Fundamental
After years of visiting Panda Express locations across multiple states, we are left asking a simple question: why has this company failed to solve a problem that has been obvious for so long? One of the most common and frustrating issues we encounter is the inability of locations to keep food available during the very times customers expect it most. We routinely find restaurants opening and at dinner time without key menu items prepared. Advertised specialty offerings are frequently missing altogether. In this case of this article specifically, twice we have not been able to get Cantonese BBQ beef brisket, which is something they are literally advertising. It's not just us. Panda Express has received multiple customer complaints regarding food not being ready during key operating hours, particularly at opening and during peak meal periods such as lunch and dinner. . We have witnessed the same operational failures at multiple Panda Express locations over a period of years. Most recently, these issues were observed in both Illinois and Indiana, but the pattern extends far beyond those states. At this point, it is difficult to view these recurring problems as anything other than a systemic failure. Whether the cause is inadequate staffing, poor forecasting, ineffective training, weak management oversight, or flawed corporate policies, the result is the same: customers arrive expecting a full menu and are met with excuses, shortages, and delays. This is something we have encountered at Chipotle as well. Simple resolution, make sure employees show up early enough before opening, and that you have well trained people prepared for the dinner rush, with additional support as well. Spend the necessary payroll to get it right instead of allowing this to continue. What is most troubling is that this has been happening for years. Customers have been reporting similar concerns for a long time, yet the company appears unable or unwilling to implement lasting solutions. A restaurant chain of Panda Express's size and resources should be capable of accurately forecasting demand, preparing food in advance of peak periods, and ensuring advertised menu items are consistently available. When the same problems continue year after year and across multiple locations, customers are justified in questioning the effectiveness of the company's operational leadership. Running out of food during opening hours or dinner service should be the exception, not a routine occurrence. We are questioning the competency of those leading the stores and upper management who continue to allow this to happen. They have to know this is a problem. This isn't some secret. - Pickleman's Sandwich Shop Review (2026)
We recently visited a Pickleman's location and came away impressed with the overall experience. Founded in 2005 in the Midwest, Pickleman's is a fast-casual restaurant that offers a menu and atmosphere somewhat similar to Potbelly Sandwich Shop, while still maintaining its own unique identity. Upon entering, we immediately noticed the bright, clean, and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant was fairly busy during our visit, which is often a good sign that a local establishment has built a loyal customer base. Despite the steady flow of customers, the operation appeared organized and efficient. The toasted sandwich concept is reminiscent of Potbelly, but Pickleman's offers enough variety to stand on its own. We decided to try the Café Club sandwich, and it did not disappoint. The ingredients tasted fresh, the flavors were well balanced, and the bread was toasted to perfection, giving the sandwich an excellent texture and warmth. They were a little light on the meat though. One of the surprises of our visit was the strawberry lemonade. It was refreshing, flavorful, and nearly perfect. Unlike some versions that can be overly tart or acidic, Pickleman's strawberry lemonade struck a pleasant balance between sweetness and citrus flavor, making it a standout beverage choice. Customer service was solid, though not particularly memorable. Employees were courteous and friendly, but there was nothing that elevated the service beyond what would normally be expected at a fast-casual restaurant. Orders were handled efficiently, and the staff maintained a welcoming environment. We did notice that they were cutting sandwiches in half after they were wrapped, which caused us to have wrapping paper inside our sandwich (see photo). If you're looking for a reliable sandwich shop that offers more than just sandwiches, it's worth a visit. We would gladly order the Café Club and strawberry lemonade again. Pickleman's currently operates locations across several states, including Missouri, Nebraska, Indiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Arizona, and Texas. - Burger King: Where Customer Service Goes to Die
Going to Burger King today no longer feels like the customer is king. In fact, many customers would argue it feels exactly the opposite. The traditional idea behind the brand was simple: make customers feel valued, appreciated, and welcome. Yet in many locations, the experience has become so cold and impersonal that it sends a completely different message. Too often, today's experience feels less like "Have It Your Way" and more like "Pay, Eat, and Screw Off." Bigger picture, there is a serious customer service crisis unfolding across the fast-food industry, and Burger King appears to be one of the companies at the center of it. The decline has become so obvious and so widespread that it can no longer be dismissed as a few bad employees or isolated incidents. What customers are experiencing today is a complete breakdown of basic hospitality, professionalism, and accountability. We have previously written about customer service failures at McDonald's, Wendy's, and other major chains. Unfortunately, after another disappointing visit to Burger King, we feel it is necessary to address the issue once again, and we will continue doing so. The reality is simple: many fast-food restaurants have forgotten who pays the bills. Customers are no longer treated as valued guests. Instead, they are often treated as inconveniences. A Satirical Representation of Today's Fast-Food Customer Experience. During recent visits to both Burger King and McDonald's, we experienced something that should be unacceptable in any customer-facing business. We received no greeting, no smile, no acknowledgment, and no thank you. Employees simply stated the total amount owed, took payment, handed over the food, and moved on. The interaction felt less human than a self-checkout machine. This should concern Burger King's corporate leadership. Customers are not asking for extraordinary service. They are not demanding white-tablecloth treatment. They are simply expecting the most basic standards of courtesy that any business should provide. Saying "hello," making eye contact, and thanking customers for their business are not difficult tasks. They are fundamental expectations. Our opinion on Burger King is not based on a single visit, a single employee, or a single restaurant location. Nor is it based on one bad experience that can be easily dismissed as an isolated incident. Our observations come from repeated visits to Burger King restaurants across multiple states, including Georgia, Minnesota, and Indiana, among others. Over time, a clear pattern has emerged—one that raises serious concerns about the company's attitude and commitment to customer service. When the same issues are encountered repeatedly across different regions, different franchise owners, and different employee teams, it becomes difficult to blame individual circumstances. At that point, the problem appears to be systemic rather than isolated. The lack of basic greetings, the absence of appreciation for customers, the disengaged attitudes, and the overall lack of professionalism have become recurring themes regardless of location. This consistency is what makes the issue particularly troubling. If poor customer service were limited to a handful of restaurants, it could be attributed to local management failures. However, when customers encounter similar experiences across multiple states and multiple locations, it suggests a deeper problem within the organization. It raises legitimate questions about employee training, management expectations, franchise oversight, and the standards being established by corporate leadership. What makes the situation even more troubling is that these experiences are becoming the norm rather than the exception. Visit after visit, Burger King locations continue to demonstrate a culture where customer service appears to be an afterthought. Employees often appear disengaged, uninterested, and completely disconnected from the customer experience. Managers either fail to recognize the problem or choose not to address it. Either way, the result is the same. This raises several important questions. Is Burger King properly training its employees? Are managers being evaluated on customer satisfaction and employee performance? Are franchise owners being held accountable when service standards fall apart? Most importantly, does Burger King's corporate leadership even recognize the severity of the problem? Because from a customer's perspective, it certainly does not appear that anyone is paying attention. Yet somewhere along the way, many companies abandoned the human element of customer service. Technology may improve efficiency, but it cannot replace respect, professionalism, and common courtesy. A restaurant can have the latest technology in the world, but if customers leave feeling ignored, unappreciated, or disrespected, the business has failed. Even the restaurant designs have gotten colder, matching the attitude many customers now experience when they walk through the door. Years ago, fast-food restaurants were designed to feel welcoming and inviting. Warm colors, comfortable seating, friendly décor, and family-oriented dining areas created an atmosphere where customers felt encouraged to stay awhile and enjoy their meal. Today, many locations feel sterile, impersonal, and transactional. Hard surfaces have replaced comfortable seating. Dining rooms often resemble waiting areas rather than places where people gather. Self-service kiosks increasingly take center stage, while human interaction becomes an afterthought. When customers are greeted by cold designs, minimal human interaction, and employees who appear disengaged, the overall experience feels distant and uninviting. Some people may wonder whether Burger King's ownership structure has played a role in the company's apparent decline in customer service. Burger King is owned by a Canadian-based parent company, and it is fair to ask whether corporate priorities have shifted over the years as the company has evolved under new leadership and ownership structures. To be clear, there is no evidence that being Canadian-owned automatically leads to poor customer service. Many Canadian companies are known for excellent customer experiences and strong customer-focused cultures. However, ownership changes can influence corporate strategy, operational priorities, management philosophy, and performance expectations. Brand loyalty is not built through advertising campaigns or promotional offers. It is built one customer interaction at a time. Every ignored customer, every emotionless transaction, and every employee who acts as though serving customers is a burden damages the brand's reputation. At some point, corporate leadership must stop blaming labor shortages, staffing challenges, or changing consumer habits and confront the real issue: standards have declined. Expectations have been lowered. Accountability has weakened. The customer experience has suffered as a result. Customers are not obligated to spend their money at Burger King. They have countless alternatives. When a company consistently delivers poor service, customers eventually vote with their wallets. If Burger King wants to remain competitive, it must recommit itself to the basic principles that every successful business understands: treat customers with respect, hold employees accountable, enforce service standards, and never take customer loyalty for granted. One step forward is for Burger King to quit hiring losers. New hiring practices that keep losers off the payroll need to be strongly evaluated, implemented, and enforced. Until that happens, Burger King will continue to lose something far more valuable than a single sale—it will lose the trust and confidence of the customers it depends on to survive.

Finally, we made our way to St. Ignace, a charming town that serves as the gateway to Mackinac Island. Pure Michigan is more than just a catchy slogan; it embodies a profound truth that resonates deeply with both residents and visitors alike. Because of this, there is understandable pressure to build more infrastructure quickly in order to keep pace with technological growth. However, the speed and scale at which data centers are being developed has also sparked growing concern among citizens, urban planners, environmental advocates, and local governments. The debate is no longer about whether data centers are necessary—they clearly are—but rather about how they should be integrated into society in a responsible and sustainable way. One of the most important issues is location. Increasingly, massive data centers are being built in rural areas where land is cheaper and local governments are eager for investment. Communities would gain greater predictability regarding where industrial-scale development occurs. Companies could benefit from proximity to shared utilities and digital infrastructure. Governments could regulate and monitor these districts more effectively. Most importantly, society could continue supporting technological advancement without allowing uncontrolled industrial sprawl to reshape the physical landscape indefinitely. There is also an aesthetic and cultural dimension to this conversation that is often ignored. Communities are more than economic units; they are places where people live, raise families, and form identities tied to their surroundings. Endless industrial expansion can fundamentally alter the visual and emotional character of a region. Open fields, forests, and rural vistas are not empty space waiting to be monetized—they hold environmental, recreational, historical, and cultural value. Once they are destroyed, they are rarely restored. Thoughtful development policy should recognize that preserving natural landscapes is not anti-technology; it is simply responsible stewardship. Ultimately, the conversation surrounding data centers reflects a broader challenge facing modern society: how to balance rapid technological advancement with long-term sustainability and quality of life. The answer is not to reject innovation or attempt to halt progress. Data centers are essential infrastructure, and demand for digital services will only continue growing. However, necessity alone does not justify unchecked expansion without standards or accountability. Society has every right to expect that corporations benefiting from technological growth also act as responsible partners in protecting communities, infrastructure, and the environment. With smarter planning, stronger expectations, and more forward-thinking design philosophies, it is entirely possible to support technological innovation while preserving natural landscapes and protecting the public interest. The fries were nothing short of near perfection; they boasted a delightful crunch that was satisfying without being overly hard. And the taste was delicious. A closer examination of the costs involved reveals that the pricing structure does not always seem to add up in a logical manner to when businesses say they are charging you for the cup. For instance, some individuals online have conducted research and state that the cost of plastic cups typically ranges between 8 cents and 20 cents per cup, with the price varying based on the volume and quality of the cup. Uline, which is a distributor of shipping, industrial, and packaging materials, sells 32oz plastic cups for 25 cents each when you do the math for a box of 300 cups. In the case of a large chain like McDonald's or Dunkin', it is reasonable to assume that they acquire their cups at a significantly reduced rate due to the sheer volume of their purchases. For instance, one could easily surmise that Dunkin' manages to procure its cups for around 10 cents each, benefiting from bulk buying discounts that come with being a major player in the beverage market. Despite this relatively low cost for the cup, we have visited two separate Dunkin' Donuts locations where they charge an astonishing $1.00 for a simple cup of water. This practice raises questions about the ethics of charging for tap water, especially when considering that the water itself is typically sourced from municipal supplies at little cost to the business. We arrived at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change location right as it opened its doors for the day, eager to experience the services it had to offer. As we drove inside, the first thing that struck us was that the place appeared to be clean and organized. The customer service we encountered was commendable from the moment we drove in. Each technician seemed to have a specific role, and their teamwork was impressive. This level of organization contributed to a seamless experience for everyone involved, allowing for quick service without compromising on quality. Even with a $10.00 off coupon, we spent $123.00 without adding an air filter or anything for an oil change! And that $10.00 off coupon seems like a way to distract the consumer. Be we are not distracted. Their cost for a simple oil change is absolutely unacceptable. To add insult to injury, we were hit with an "extra oil charge" of $25.28, which seems excessive and unjustified. This additional fee raises serious questions about the integrity of the pricing practices at Valvoline. The vehicle we had serviced has a maximum oil capacity of only 8.1 quarts. Given this specification, it is perplexing to understand why we were charged for the cost of approximately 4 quarts of oil on top of the standard service fee unless they are expecting vehicles they service to only have 4 quarts of oil or something. They should tell you upfront that you will get an "extra oil charge", without doing so seems shady as hell. Our recommendation is to try finding a smaller auto mechanic shop you can trust that won't charge as much. When it comes to vehicle maintenance and repairs, the choice of mechanic can significantly impact both the quality of service and the overall cost. Smaller auto mechanic shops often provide a more personalized experience, where you can build a relationship with the staff and feel confident that your vehicle is in good hands. These local shops typically have lower overhead costs compared to larger dealerships or corporate chains, allowing them to offer competitive pricing for their services. By taking the time to find a smaller, reliable mechanic, you can ensure that your vehicle receives the attention and care it deserves without feeling that you were robbed.
